Cape Byron - the eastern most point of mainland Australia
It was a working day for Lakmi and her husband. Our initial plan was to go to Byron bay on Saturday, but as there was a storm forecasted for Saturday, we decided it's best I go alone today. Drive from Gold Coast to Byron bay town was pretty straight forward down the Pacific highway, which took just over an hour. Once in Byron bay I followed the route to the light house, which was a steep and narrow climb at some points. The road leads to the base of the lighthouse. Parking is an issue here. Had to wait in line about 10mins to get a parking spot and it costs 8 dollars in cash. I only had 4 dollars with me and the kind security allowed me to park! Parking at the base is for only 1 hour, which is quite enough to see the place. If waiting for parking is an issue for you or you need more time to explore, it's best you park somewhere before the base park and do the extra hike to the lighthouse.
The views were stunning. The lighthouse was overseeing the placid pacific. Water was of the most beautiful blue and the sun was shining bright, what a beautiful day to visit Byron bay. The wind from the pacific is quite strong I was holding to the rail at times hoping I wouldn't get blown away.
Behind the lighthouse is a track which leads to the eastern most point of main land Australia. And the views from here are just stunning. You could go further down this track and reach the beach and another viewing platform. The climb down this path is easy but the climb up was quite challenging in the summer sun of New South Wales and especially without a water bottle.
There is a small museum at the bottom of the lighthouse and there are climbs every 30mins to go up. The place has a cafe and bathroom facilities. There were telescopes operated by dollar coins around the lighthouse. I had already lost my dollar coins for the parking, so no telescope for me...
